Mykonos Semeli hotel

Our unbiased review

In Mykonos town, location is king, and the Hotel Semeli in Mykonos Island is very much a part of the royal family.  Overlooking the white and blue buildings that make up Mykonos town, the Semeli hotel is ideally placed for the guest who wants to enjoy Mykonos nightlife, but would prefer a home base that is a little more ‘chilled’.

Chilled is actually a rather appropriate description of the Mykonos Semeli hotel all round.  Ambient music filled the air around the large pool, flanked by a pool bar and wooden deck furniture arranged in small groups.  As the pool area was very open, it would be safe to assume that it was not very private, but this was not the case as some careful hunting revealed several more intimate loungers away from the crowd.

Elsewhere this theme continues, starting with the staff of Mykonos Semeli hotel.  Casually attired, there was certainly no standing on ceremony and although the service was good, it was far more laid back than its neighboring sister property the Belvedere hotel.  The whole atmosphere was one of relaxed enjoyment, with a slightly younger vibe than other similar Mykonos town hotels.

As with the Belvedere hotel, The Mykonos Semeli hotel was once a stately home and now boasts forty two rooms and three suites, all of which are well appointed with high quality furnishings and bed linen and although they are attractive enough and have everything one would need (air conditioning, satellite TV, double glazing and a balcony/veranda), none seem to have a theme – preferring to simply be comfortable and luxurious.  While this is no bad thing, it does mean they lack a little character.

This downside does continue throughout the Mykonos Semeli hotel (the name is taken from an island by the way) and is a little unfortunate, as otherwise it is a superb luxury hotel in a prime spot.  Why should you stay here then, you may ask; a question that is easier to answer when you begin to understand why the Semeli hotel feels this way.

Visit out of season, with few other guests and you may wonder why the Mykonos Semeli hotel has any kind of reputation at all, but visit in the season and it will come alive – as the hotel needs the Mykonian life.  People are its lifeforce, without them it slumbers lazily, barely making an effort to show itself off, but when crowds gather around the pool or for the traditional weekly barbeque at the Thioni Restaurant (an event open to anyone rather than simply guests, more proof of the hotel’s love of life), the place will buzz with enjoyment.

It may not be for everyone, but if there is one hotel on the island that embodies the Mykonian lifestyle, it’s the Mykonos Semeli hotel.

Rooms & Suites - Official text

The Mykonos Semeli hotel has created its own space the owners gave their personal touch and colour, that is something that requires love and enthusiasm. Even though that the decorative style is unified and follows the traditional Mykonian architectural style, every single part of the Mykonos Semeli hotel has its own identity thus creating a cosy and homely atmosphere. The minute you walk into our hotel rooms, your breath will be taken away. The combination of this traditional architectural structure benefits from modern facilities and personal taste. One of the best choices for relaxation in Mykonos Town.
